A key benefit of running in the cloud is that software updates can be applied indiscreetly and without downtime. Leveraging the automated patch and upgrade capabilities built into VMware Cloud Foundation, IBM Cloud is able to make installing software updates very simple and intuitive.

In this interactive simulation, we will show how to apply a software updates to your VMware Cloud Foundation instance running on the IBM Cloud.

This part of the lab is presented as a Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation. This will allow you to experience steps which are too time-consuming or resource intensive to do live in the lab environment. In this simulation, you can use the software interface as if you are interacting with a live environment.

The orange boxes show where to click, and the left and right arrow keys can also be used to move through the simulation in either direction.

Identify Available Updates

We begin by logging onto the IBM Cloud to identify any available updates.

  1. Click the IBM Cloud for VMware Soluti tab in the browser
    • Here were logged into the IBM portal viewing our infrastructure. Lets begin by viewing the currently installed software versions.
  2. Click Summary
    • Under properties we are able to view the deployed components with their respective version numbers. Here we see that we are currently running vCenter Server version 6.0 update 2a (denoted by the build number 4632154) and NSX for vSphere version 6.2.4 (denoted by the build number 4292526).
    • Note: If we were to scroll down we would see the other software components and their versions. For the sake of the simulation, lets note the vCenter Server and NSX versions and proceed with scheduling the update.

Applying Software Updates

  1. Click Update and Patch
    • Here we see there is currently a software update available for Cloud Foundation. The IBM version number for this update is 1.7 and the status shows it as available. Lets view the details of the update to include the specific Cloud Foundation software components included and their specific versions.
  2. Click the down arrow to expand the update details
    • Here we see an estimate for how long it will take to apply the update to the Cloud Foundation instance along with details about the software components included in the update. As you can see, this is a pretty significant update to the SDDC software stack. It includes:
      • Update the VMware SDDC Manager (from 2.2 to version 2.3)
      • Update the NSX for vSphere (from 6.2.4 to version 6.2.6)
      • Update the vCenter Server (from 6.0 Update 2a to version 6.0u3b)
      • Apply the ESXi 6.0 Express Patch 7c to all hosts
    • Lets go ahead and apply the update.
  3. Click the up arrow to collapse the update details
  4. Click the icon under actions
  5. Click Update Now
  6. Click Update to confirm the update
    • Thats it, the update is now scheduled and will be applied to the Cloud Foundation instance. The update will be applied in the background in a non-intrusive manner.
  7. Click X to close the Your selected updates are being installed pop-up.
    • While the update is in progress you can monitor the status and track the progress as the updates are applied. As the actual update takes several hours to complete we have fast forwarded the simulation. Once the update finishes, we see it listed as an Installed Software Update.

Verify Software Updates

  1. Click the scroll bar to scroll up
  2. Click Summary
    • Note that the vCenter Server and NSX versions now reflect the new versions following the successful update. Lets switch to the vSphere web client and check the status of our SDDC following the update.
  3. Click the vSphere Web Client tab
  4. Click Hosts and Clusters
    • Here we see that the ESXi 6.0 Express Patch 7c has been applied (as indicated by the build number 5251623).
  5. Click the Home Icon
  6. Click Networking  Security
  7. Click Installation
  8. Click Host Preparation
  9. Expand the SDDC-Cluster
    • Here we are able to confirm the NSX version has also been updated to 6.2.6

This concludes our overview on how to apply software updates to VMware Cloud Foundation running in the IBM Cloud.
