In this simulation we will show add capacity to an existing workload domain using the expand workload domain feature in VMware SDDC Manager.

Review Current Workload Domain Capacity Settings

This part of the lab is presented as a Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation. This will allow you to experience steps which are too time-consuming or resource intensive to do live in the lab environment. In this simulation, you can use the software interface as if you are interacting with a live environment.

The orange boxes show where to click, and the left and right arrow keys can also be used to move through the simulation in either direction.

We begin at the SDDC Manager Dashboard:

  1. Click VIEW DETAILS next to Workload Domains
    • We see the TMM-01 VI Workload Domain.  Let's start by reviewing the details of the vSphere cluster that is backing this workload domain.
  2. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
  3. Click on the icon labeled TMM-01 VI Domain
  4. Click on the scroll bar to scroll down
    • On the "General Info" tab, we can see the workload domain type along with the current CPU, Memory and Storage settings.  We can also confirm that there are currently three hosts backing this workload domain.
  5. Click the vSphere Web Client tab in the browser
    • Here we see the "TMM01-0-cluster" that is backing the workload domain.  In this demo, we'll expand this cluster by adding a fourth host.
  6. Click the VMware Cloud Foundation tab in the browser to return to SDDC Manager
  7. Click EXPAND DOMAIN
  8. Click the scroll bar twice to scroll to the bottom of the page
    • Workload domains are expanded by adding additional ESXi hosts
    • Here we are able to select the hosts from the free pool that we want to add to the TMM-01 workload domain.  In this example we only see one host in the free pool - R1N7.
  9. Click host R1N7
    • After selecting this host we can see the "Total Selected Resources" shown in the UI is automatically updated to reflect the number of Cores, Memory, and Disk that will be available to this cluster following the expansion.
  10. Click NEXT
    • At the "Review Expand Domain" window, we are able to review the change.  We see a summary of the current (existing) capacity settings and the future (expanded) capacity settings
  11. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
    • We also see a summary of the additional server that will be added to the workload domain.  Just the one in this example.
  12. Click APPLY
  13. Click CONFIRM
    • The workflow to expand the domain is initiated.
  14. Click OK
    • We can monitor the progress of the expand domain workflow from the STATUS page.
  15. Click STATUS
  16. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
  17. Click VIEW DETAILS
    • We see the "VI Resource Pool - Expanding TMM-01" workflow is active.
  18. Click VI Resource Pool - Expanding TMM-01 to expand the workflow
  19. Click the scroll bar to scroll the page down
  20. Click View Sub Tasks
    • Here we see the list of subtasks that make-up the "VI Resource Pool - Expanding TMM-01" workflow.
  21. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
    • SDDC Manager orchestrates 22 separate tasks which include:  adding the hosts to the vCenter Inventory, joining the host to the cluster, expanding the vSAN datastore, configuring the distributed switch and installing and configuring NSX.
    • We see here that all the sub-tasks have completed successfully.
  22. Click Workflows to return to the Workflows view
    • Here we see the "VI Resource Pool - Expanding TMM-01" workflow is has completed successfully.
  23. Click DASHBOARD
    • Let's return to the "TMM-01 VI Workload Domain Details" view and confirm that the additional capacity has been added.
  24. Click VIEW DETAILS next to Workload Domains
  25. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
  26. Click the icon labeled TMM-01 VI Domain
  27. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
    • Here we can see that the capacity has increased and there are now four hosts backing the workload domain.  Let's return to the vSphere Web Client and view this change there as well.
  28. Click the vSphere Web Client tab in the browser
    • Here we see the "TMM01-0-cluster" cluster now has four hosts, including the host "r1n7.sddc.vmware.com" which we just added.
  29. Click the VMware Cloud Foundation browser tab to return to the SDDC Manager
  30. Click TMM01-0-CLUSTER under Cluster Info
  31. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
    • Here we see cluster details from SDDC Manager, again reflecting the addition of the new host.

This completes our simulation on expanding an existing workload domain.  As you can see, it is very easy to assign additional capacity to an existing workload domain using the SDDC Manager Expand Workload Domain feature.
