In this simulation we will delete a workload domain using the VMware SDDC Manager.

Delete Workload Domain

This part of the lab is presented as a Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation. This will allow you to experience steps which are too time-consuming or resource intensive to do live in the lab environment. In this simulation, you can use the software interface as if you are interacting with a live environment.

The orange boxes show where to click, and the left and right arrow keys can also be used to move through the simulation in either direction.

We begin at the SDDC Manager Dashboard:

  1. Click VIEW DETAILS next to Workload Domains
    • We see the TMM-01 VI Domain.
  2. Click the icon labeled TMM-01 VI Domain
  3. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
    • We see a summary of the TMM-01 virtual infrastructure workload domain along with information about the vSphere cluster backing it.  Let's review the details of the cluster in the vSphere Web Client.
  4. Click the vSphere Web Client tab in the browser
    • Here we see the "TMM01-0-cluster" is currently configured with four hosts.  We're going to delete the workload domain which will remove this cluster from the vCenter inventory and return the hosts back to the Cloud Foundation free pool, where they can be re-assigned to other workload domains.
  5. Click the VMware Cloud Foundation tab to return to the SDDC Manager
    • We return to the TMM-01 Domain Details page where we will delete this workload domain
  6. Click DELETE DOMAIN in the upper right corner
  7. Click DELETE to confirm
    • We are notified that the workload domain deletion workflow has been initiated.
    • To monitor the progress we can go to the workflow status page.
  8. Click STATUS
  9. Click the scroll bar down
  10. Click VIEW DETAILS under Workflow Tasks
    • We see the "VI Resource Pool - Deletion of TMM-01" workflow is running.
  11. Click the VI Resource Pool - Deletion of TMM-01 to expand it
  12. Click the scroll bar down
    • We see the delete workflow is comprised of 24 separate tasks.
  13. Click View Sub Tasks
    • Here we can see details of the subtasks.  Deleting a workload domain only takes a few minutes.  During the deletion, the SDDC Manager removes the vCenter Server and NSX Manager VMs from the management domain, deletes the workload domain from the vCenter inventory, removes the vSAN datastore and restores the ESXi configuration on the host, reconfigures the IP addresses on the hosts and switch ports, and returns the hosts to the free pool.
    • Here we see all the subtasks have completed successfully.
  14. Click Workflows to return to the Workflow Summary
    • With the workload domain deleted, let's return to the vSphere Web Client to verify that the cluster backing the workload domain has also been deleted.
  15. Click the vSphere Web Client tab in the browser
    • Here we see the management cluster is the only cluster in our inventory.  The "TMM01-0-cluster" has been deleted along with its corresponding vCenter Server and NSX Manager instances.
  16. Click the VMware Cloud Foundation tab in the browser to return to the SDDC Manager
  17. Click DASHBOARD to return to the SDDC Manager Dashboard
  18. Click VIEW DETAILS under Workload Domains
  19. Click the scroll bar to scroll down
    • Here we see a summary of the Management Workload Domain.  The TMM-01 Workload Domain has been deleted and its resources returned to the free pool.

This completes our simulation on deleting a workload domain using the SDDC Manager in Cloud Foundation.  You can see how easy it is to delete workload domains after they are no longer needed and return the previously allocated resources to the free pool where they can be reallocated to meet future business needs.
