This part of the lab is presented as a Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation. This will allow you to experience steps which are too time-consuming or resource intensive to do live in the lab environment. In this simulation, you can use the software interface as if you are interacting with a live environment.

The orange boxes show where to click, and the left and right arrow keys can also be used to move through the simulation in either direction.

Via the built-in 'vSAN Capacity Overview' Dashboard, you'll notice that vR Ops is showing aggregate and per cluster statistics.  The top three Widgets roll up capacity statistics from all of the vSAN Clusters in our environment.

Let's start by examining the Used Disk trend across all of our vSAN Clusters

  1. Each metric has a sparkline graph that represents the metric over time. In the Total vSAN Storage Capacity widget, click to drill-down on Used Disk Space.
  2. Click the scroll bar down so that our timeline is visible
  3. Note that we have clear visibility now Disk Usage trending including a brief spike of Usage prior to Jul 3.  Click OK to return to our Dashboard.
  4. In the upper-right hand Widget, "Total vSAN Capacity Left & Savings", note that we can see the amount of Capacity Remaining (2.37 TB) and our Dedupe & Compression savings to date.

Let's select a specific vSAN Cluster to view related Capacity information on a per Cluster basis.

  1. Click the vSAN Cluster(Production-Mixed-Std)
  2. Note that we can see Dedupe & Compression rates along with a comparison of savings with and without this All Flash vSAN capability enabled.  We can easily view how these metrics are trending.
  3. Click the scroll bar down

The Capacity view now displays a Heat Map of vSAN Capacity devices indicating fullness and balance.

  1. Click on the indicated Capacity Devices to expose details of the device and a history of its usage.
  2. Note that the Capacity Dashboard also incorporates CPU and Memory Capacity remaining in the Cluster.  vR Ops can use this data to project when resources related to CPU, Memory and Disk Capacity may run out.
  3. Opportunities to reclaim Storage are also presented.  This represents unused VMs and VMs with Snapshots.

In Summary, this native vR Ops vSAN Operations Overview dashboard delivers:

  • Aggregate capacity statistics across multiple vSAN Clusters
  • Historical trending of Capacity related statistics
  • Unique capacity data related to Deduplication and Compression
  • Unique correlations between CPU, Memory and Capacity Consumption rates
